Getting to know....
....Herb Thompson
Herb grew up in Williamson, West Virginia, a little town in the southern part of the state. While in high school, he played tenor sax in a 10 piece dance band, in rock & roll groups, and in a jazz combo. He went to the University of Kentucky for his undergraduate studies and continued to play in the jazz combo when home on vacations. He attended West Virginia School of Medicine and the sax was put away. After graduating from medical school and completing a residency in orthopedic surgery, he practiced in Akron, Ohio, until retiring in February, 2002.
After retiring, he got the sax out again and in the fall of 2005, he got involved in playing in a New Horizons band in Akron.
In addition to tenor sax, he also started playing baritone sax.
Herb and Delores, his wife of 43 years have 2 children and 2 grandchildren. They come to Hilton Head in November and return to Ohio in April since retirement; doing everything they can to avoid snow. Last winter one Sunday they decided to take in the Dixieland Jam session and really enjoyed it. Herb got interested in Dixieland music and now really appreciates the opportunity to play with the guys at the Dixieland Jam.
