Getting to know.... Larry Sonntag
Born in the Year of the Crash in New Castle, PA, Larry began his musical
interest on the violin in 6th grade,continuing through high school. He also
played tuba for four years in the high school band.
He received a bachelors degree from Centre College in Danville, KY, with a
major in history and minor in chemistry.
He took up the tenor sax his first year in college and formed a dance band that
played big band style for college dances. He played with other local musicians as
well and even played in a polka band from time to time.
After receiving a Masters Degree in history from Indiana University, he
worked for General Electric and Cummins Engine. He then became a stock-
broker from which he retired in 1998 after 20 years with PaineWebber and 10
years in a private firm in Ann Arbor, MI.
He and his wife, Allene, have been married for 47 years and have 4 children
and 6 grandchildren. Both he and Allene are private pilots and have flown their
Bonanza for some 20 years all over the States, including many previous trips to
Hilton Head. Allene has flown to Alaska twice by herself.
When Larry is not on the bandstand, you may find him volunteering his time at the
Sheriff’s Office or Hilton Head Hospital.
