Getting to know....
George Smedley

In 2010, I retired as a manufacturing executive with MillerCoors in Milwaukee, WI, and my wife, Karen, and I relocated to Beaufort SC soon afterwards.
I was an All-State trumpet player in high school back in Ohio and then went to Ohio State University where I was a member of Ohio State's Marching Band, Concert bands and Brass Choir. I have played extensively before and after graduation.

We raised three children, two of which are professional musicians. Our son, Dr. Eric Smedley, is an Assistant Professor of Music at Indiana University in loomington, Indiana. He is the Assistant Director of IU's Marching Band and a very accomplished trumpet player. He also directs his own concert band. Our daughter, Adrienne Smedley, is a voice teacher, sings in a group in the Akron, Ohio, area, and is on staff in a music store in Kent Ohio. Our youngest son Chris recently graduated from Marshall University.

After retirement, Iíve been a member of the Choir at Sea Island Presbyterian Church in Beaufort and have done frequent solo trumpet work at the church with Charles Frost, Director of Music. In addition, I am a member of the Low Country Concert Band, the Low Country Jazz Band, the Low Country Wind Symphony and play and help direct the Hilton Head Plantation Big Band.

I enjoy playing jazz, especially Dixieland jazz. In addition to trumpet, I am now able to improvise on my newly purchased valve trombone. I appreciate the opportunity to join the musicians on stage with the DJSLC and plan to keep it up as long as I am able.
